Which rims really fit my car? (ET, width & fitment explained)

Many car enthusiasts make the same mistake: buying wheels that look perfect on paper, but in practice, they just don't fit quite right. The result? Tires rubbing, steering wheel vibrations, an awkward stance, or a car that simply doesn't drive like it should.
In almost all cases this is not due to the rim itself, but to an incorrect estimation of the ET value, width or total fitment .

In this article, we explain what you really need to pay attention to when choosing rims, so you don't make an expensive mistake.

What determines whether a rim fits your car?

A rim doesn't "fit" just because it has the same inch size. These are the factors that determine whether it will fit:

  • Bolt pitch – number of bolts and spacing
  • Hub diameter – how the rim centers on the car
  • Rim width – determines how the tire sits
  • ET value (offset) – position of the rim relative to the wheel arch

All these components work together . One wrong choice can ruin the whole thing.

ET value: where things most often go wrong

The ET value determines how far the rim is inward or outward .
What many people do: they google “ET value [car]” and blindly copy it.

Why that often goes wrong:

  • those values are usually based on a standard chassis
  • no account for wider rims
  • no account for aftermarket brakes
  • no account of usage (daily vs performance)

An ET that “can fit” is different from an ET that is optimal .

Width + ET = fitment (not to be seen separately)

A wider rim with the same ET will look very different than a narrow rim.
Yet these two are often viewed separately — and that is precisely where things go wrong.

Example:

  • 8.5J ET35 ≠ 9.5J ET35
  • same ET, totally different fitment

That's why “comparing lists” only works to a certain extent.

Why 'fits your car' is often incorrect

Many online stores use texts such as:

Fits [make & model]

What they don't say:

  • not with this reduction
  • not with this band
  • not with these brakes
  • not at full steering lock

A car isn't a factory engine. Every setup is different.

How We Evaluate Fitment (and Why We Sometimes Say No)

We never just look at what is possible , but at what is right :

  • current setup
  • desired look (OEM+, performance, aggressive)
  • driving behavior
  • wheel arches & clearance
  • future plans (lowering, different tires)

Therefore:

  • we only work with brands we know
  • We will only order when delivery is certain.
  • let's not let customers pay until everything is correct

Sometimes that means selling no .
This prevents any hassle afterwards — for you and for us.

Summary: How to avoid choosing the wrong rims

✔ Look beyond inch size
✔ See ET and width as one whole
✔ Don't blindly trust internet lists
✔ Think about use and future
✔ Have the fitment checked by someone with knowledge

Good rims complete a car.
Wrong rims ruin everything.
